Coat — Dense, plush, weatherproof double coat with a soft undercoat and a harsher straight outer coat. Heavy seasonal shedding.

Recognised colours — All colours including white, brindle, and pinto; bold, clear and brilliant markings — broader palette than the Japanese Akita.

Dignified, courageous, loyal and profoundly devoted. A powerful, reserved guardian — affectionate with family, aloof with strangers.

Trainability — Challenging — highly intelligent but independent and dominant; experienced, firm, consistent handling and early socialisation are essential.

Grooming — High. Brush 2–3 times weekly, daily during the heavy seasonal coat blow.

Good with — Best with experienced owners; can be dog-aggressive and territorial — careful socialisation required. Devoted to its own family.

The dense double coat makes this a heat-sensitive breed — provide AC, shade, water and cool-hour exercise in India.

Health notes — Hip/elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, autoimmune conditions (VKH, pemphigus), bloat, progressive retinal atrophy.
