Origin — Belgium

Coat — Long, straight, abundant double coat with a dense undercoat; a profuse collarette (ruff), breeches and feathering.

Recognised colours — Solid black, or black with limited white on the chest and toes.

Intelligent, alert, sensitive and intensely devoted. A watchful, energetic herder — loyal to family, reserved with strangers.

Trainability — High — extremely intelligent and trainable, but sensitive; needs gentle, consistent, experienced handling.

Grooming — High. Brush 2–3 times weekly; heavy seasonal shedding of the long coat.

Good with — Best with active, experienced owners; protective and reserved — early socialisation essential. Strong herding drive.

The long black double coat needs serious heat management in India — shade, water, AC and cool exercise hours.

Health notes — Hip/elbow dysplasia, epilepsy, eye conditions (PRA, cataracts), hypothyroidism. Generally a robust working breed.
