Origin — Caucasus region (Russia / Georgia)

Coat — Thick, profuse, weatherproof double coat (long, medium or short varieties) with a heavy mane and dense undercoat.

Recognised colours — Grey, fawn, rust, white, brindle, and pied; many shades, often with a mask.

Independent, fearless, calm and intensely territorial. A formidable livestock-guardian — devoted to family, deeply suspicious of strangers and powerful.

Trainability — Very challenging — extremely independent and dominant; only for highly experienced owners with rigorous early socialisation.

Grooming — High. Brush several times weekly; heavy seasonal shedding of the profuse coat.

Good with — Strictly for experienced guardian-dog owners; powerful, protective and territorial — not a pet for typical households.

The very heavy coat makes this a serious heat challenge in India — long-coat types especially need AC, shade, water and cool-hour management.

Health notes — Hip/elbow dysplasia, bloat, heart conditions, obesity. Generally a hardy mountain guardian.
