Origin — Australia (1990s cross between Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Toy/Miniature Poodle)
Coat — Soft, wavy to curly, low-shedding coat. Can be curly, wavy, or straight depending on genetics. Requires regular brushing and professional grooming every 6–8 weeks.
Common colours — Black, red, gold, cream, tan, chocolate, with or without white markings. Coat colour may lighten as the dog matures.
Loving, friendly, intelligent and playful. Forms deep attachments and thrives on human companionship. Social and eager to please, making them ideal for first-time dog owners. Can develop separation anxiety if left alone too long.
Trainability — High — intelligent and eager to please. Responds excellently to positive reinforcement. Keep sessions short and fun. Early socialisation helps prevent fearfulness.
Grooming — High maintenance. Regular brushing 2–3 times per week minimum, professional grooming every 6–8 weeks. Floppy ears are prone to infections — clean regularly.
Good with — Excellent with families, children, singles, seniors, and other pets. Ideal apartment dog. Moderate exercise needs — one or two short walks daily plus indoor playtime.
Small size and moderate coat make the Cavapoo well-suited to Indian apartment living. Avoid extreme heat; keep indoors with cooling during peak summer. Generally one of the more adaptable designer breeds for Indian conditions.
Health notes — Mitral valve disease (inherited from Cavalier side), patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, ear infections, and dental issues. Always source from breeders who health-screen both parent breeds.
