Origin — England
Coat — Short, smooth, fine and close-lying single coat. Low-maintenance but moderate shedding; the many facial and body folds require regular cleaning.
Recognised colours — Brindle, fawn, red, white, piebald, fallow; various combinations including brindle-and-white, red-and-white and fawn-and-white.
Calm, courageous, loyal and affectionate. A dignified, gentle companion that bonds deeply with its family and is famously good-natured despite a gruff appearance. Can be territorial but rarely aggressive.
Trainability — Moderate — intelligent but famously stubborn; short, positive, reward-based sessions work best. Patience is key.
Grooming — Low overall, but facial and body folds must be cleaned and dried daily to prevent infection. Brush weekly; clean ears regularly.
Good with — Excellent with children, seniors and other pets. A calm, low-exercise apartment companion that thrives on human company. Cannot swim — never leave unsupervised near water.
Brachycephalic — extremely heat-sensitive. Indian summers, especially in cities like Hyderabad, are dangerous for this breed. Keep strictly indoors with AC; exercise only briefly in the cool early morning or late evening. They overheat quickly and cannot swim.
Health notes — Brachycephalic airway syndrome, hip and elbow dysplasia, cherry eye, skin-fold dermatitis, patellar luxation, heart conditions, and dystocia (most need C-sections for whelping). Ethical sourcing from health-screened lines is critical.
