Origin — Brazil

Coat — Short, smooth, dense single coat; loose, supple skin with folds. Very low maintenance.

Recognised colours — Fawn, black, or brindle; a black mask is common; white markings on feet, chest and tail tip allowed.

Courageous, devoted, determined and intensely protective. A powerful tracking-guardian famed for loyalty to family and strong wariness of strangers ('ojeriza').

Trainability — Challenging — intelligent but dominant and naturally suspicious; only for highly experienced owners with rigorous early socialisation.

Grooming — Very low. Weekly wipe-down; clean folds.

Good with — Strictly for very experienced guardian-dog owners; deeply loyal to family but instinctively distrustful of outsiders — careful management essential.

A Brazilian breed with reasonable heat tolerance for a giant; the short coat helps — still needs shade and water in India.

Health notes — Hip/elbow dysplasia, bloat (gastric torsion), entropion/ectropion, hypothyroidism.
