Origin — Canary Islands (Spain)

Coat — Short, coarse, flat single coat with a slightly rough texture; very low maintenance.

Recognised colours — Brindle (all shades) and fawn, usually with a black mask; some white markings permitted.

Confident, calm, dominant and intensely protective. A powerful Canary Island guardian — devoted and steady with family, formidable and territorial with intruders.

Trainability — Challenging — intelligent but dominant and strong-willed; only for highly experienced owners with rigorous early socialisation.

Grooming — Very low. Weekly wipe-down.

Good with — Strictly for very experienced guardian-dog owners; powerful and protective — careful socialisation and firm, responsible management essential.

An island breed with reasonable heat tolerance for its size; the short coat helps — still needs shade and water in India.

Health notes — Hip/elbow dysplasia, bloat (gastric torsion), dilated cardiomyopathy, entropion, epilepsy.
