Origin & Coat

Origin — Switzerland (Great St Bernard Pass)

Coat — Two varieties — short-haired (smooth, dense) and long-haired (slightly wavy); both heavy, weatherproof double coats.

Recognised colours — White with red/mahogany markings, or red/brindle with white; a dark mask is typical.

Temperament

Gentle, calm, friendly and devoted — the legendary Alpine rescue dog and gentle giant. Patient, tolerant and deeply loyal to family.

Care & Training

Trainability — Moderate–high — intelligent and willing but slow-maturing; gentle, consistent training from puppyhood is essential.

Grooming — High (especially the long-haired). Brush several times weekly; heavy seasonal shedding; clean facial folds and eyes.

Good with — Wonderful with children, families and other pets. A calm, loving, patient family giant.

India Climate & Health

A heavy Alpine breed very sensitive to Indian heat — strict AC, shade, water and cool-hour exercise are essential. Heat is a serious danger.

Health notes — Short lifespan; hip/elbow dysplasia, bloat (gastric torsion), entropion/ectropion, dilated cardiomyopathy, bone cancer, heat sensitivity.
