Origin — Japan

Coat — Stiff, straight outer coat with a soft thick undercoat; plush, weatherproof double coat that blows heavily twice a year.

Recognised colours — Red, black-and-tan, sesame (red with black tipping), and cream; all show the cream 'urajiro' markings.

Bold, independent, alert and dignified — almost cat-like. Loyal but aloof, with a strong will and famous spirit.

Trainability — Challenging — highly intelligent but independent and stubborn; early socialisation and patient training essential.

Grooming — Moderate. Weekly brushing, with heavy daily brushing during the twice-yearly coat blow.

Good with — Best with experienced owners; can be reserved with other dogs and has notable prey drive.

Double coat handles cold well but needs heat management in Indian summers — shade, water, AC and brushing for airflow.

Health notes — Patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, allergies, glaucoma, hypothyroidism. A genetically robust, long-lived breed.
