Origin — Siberia (Russia)
Coat — Thick, well-furred weatherproof double coat: a dense soft undercoat with a straight, smooth outer coat. Heavy seasonal shedding.
Recognised colours — All colours from black to pure white, with striking facial masks; eyes may be blue, brown, or bi-coloured.
Friendly, outgoing, energetic and mischievous. A pack-oriented sled dog — sociable, independent and famously escape-prone.
Trainability — Challenging — intelligent but stubborn and independent; needs patient, experienced, consistent training.
Grooming — High. Brush 2–3 times weekly, with daily brushing during heavy coat blows. Never shave the double coat.
Good with — Sociable with people and dogs; very high prey drive means caution with small pets. Needs secure, escape-proof fencing.
An Arctic breed poorly suited to Indian heat — demands AC, shade, water, and exercise strictly in cool early-morning/late-evening hours. Heat stroke is a real risk.
Health notes — Hip dysplasia, eye conditions (cataracts, PRA, corneal dystrophy), hypothyroidism, zinc-responsive dermatosis.
