Origin — Tibet / Himalayas

Coat — Thick, long, weatherproof double coat with a heavy mane around the neck and shoulders; a profuse, dense undercoat.

Recognised colours — Black, black-and-tan, blue, gold, and red sable; white markings on chest and feet permitted.

Independent, aloof, calm and intensely protective. An ancient Himalayan guardian — devoted and gentle with family, reserved and territorial with strangers, and famously nocturnal in its watchfulness.

Trainability — Very challenging — highly independent and strong-willed (bred to guard alone); needs an experienced owner and thorough early socialisation.

Grooming — High. Brush several times weekly; one heavy annual coat blow sheds the entire undercoat.

Good with — Best with experienced owners and space; a powerful guardian, protective and territorial — early socialisation essential.

The massive Himalayan coat makes this one of the most heat-sensitive breeds — strict AC, shade, water and cool-hour exercise are essential in India.
