Origin — Turkey (Sivas / Kangal region)

Coat — Short to medium, dense, weatherproof double coat with a thick undercoat; a slightly longer mane around the neck.

Recognised colours — Pale fawn to dun or steel-grey, always with a black mask and black ears.

Calm, confident, independent and steadfast. A premier livestock-guardian — devoted and gentle with its flock and family, formidable and brave against threats.

Trainability — Challenging — highly independent (bred to guard alone); needs an experienced owner, space and thorough early socialisation.

Grooming — Moderate. Brush weekly; heavier during seasonal shedding.

Good with — Best with experienced owners and rural/spacious settings; calm and protective with family, naturally wary and territorial with strangers.

An Anatolian breed bred for hot, dry summers — good heat tolerance for a giant; still needs shade and water in India.

Health notes — Generally very healthy and long-lived for a giant; watch for hip dysplasia, entropion, and bloat.
