Origin — Germany

Coat — Short, smooth, sleek single coat (a rare long-haired variety also exists); the trademark metallic 'grey ghost' sheen.

Recognised colours — Shades of mouse-grey to silver-grey; the eyes are amber, grey or blue-grey.

Energetic, fearless, intelligent and intensely devoted. A high-drive hunting dog that bonds obsessively and hates being alone.

Trainability — High — very intelligent and trainable, but the strong drive and sensitivity need experienced, consistent handling.

Grooming — Very low. Weekly wipe-down and brush.

Good with — Best with active, experienced families; prone to separation anxiety and needs constant companionship and exercise.

Short coat handles Indian heat well; exercise in cool hours. An athletic breed needing hours of daily activity.

Health notes — Hip dysplasia, bloat (gastric torsion — feed carefully), entropion, von Willebrand's disease, hypothyroidism.
